Bestway Photo began as a sports photography company. It was established in 1967 by Gord Huber, who had been engaged previously doing bowling photos across Canada. Though continuing to do bowling photos, he began to concentrate increasingly on photography for youth sports associations. While his sports clientele continued to expand, Mr. Huber recognized an interest in daycare photos was developing; so, in the mid 70s he began to provide photographic services to daycares and preschools. This preschool work grew steadily in the years which followed. By the 90s Bestway had become the leading preschool photography provider in the BC Lower Mainland, and this enterprise has now surpassed youth sports as the greater percentage of its business. In the mid 80s, Bestway ceased doing bowling photos but began venturing into even more photographic directions. These included dance studios, figure skating clubs and some small schools; but most notable was the addition of service to scouting, guiding and cadet organizations. In 1985, Mr. Huber made another decision which came to be of major significance to Bestway's future: he hired Ray Trotter as a photographer. A year later, Mr. Trotter was promoted to head photographer. When, in 1998, Mr. Huber chose to retire, Mr. Trotter became the new owner. In 2001, Bestway began to move more seriously into school photography, with the introduction of its CHOICES program. As a result, schools have now become the third largest (after preschools and youth sports) - and growing - part of the Bestway business. Over the years we at Bestway have resisted the temptation to expand our business through use of come-and-go seasonal photographers. We choose to book only assignments which permanent photographic staff can handle, adding new on-going photographic staff as the need becomes apparent. This has helped us to gain long-term photographers - our longest-serving photographer (other than Mr. Trotter, who continues to do photography) joined us in 1991; our current head photographer, Dennis Woloshuk, has been on board since 1999.more...See more text
