A small, family-run restaurant, Kishimoto specializes in creative rolls made with love and presented with flair. There’s an extensive variety of choice for vegetarians, including the Mamenoki roll, made with edamame, avocado, carrot and – wait for it – cornflakes. This Commercial Drive favourite serves as an ideal pit stop for lunch, or a more leisurely dinner of experimental roll choices.
Kishimoto is widely known to serve the best sushi on The Drive. With a claim like that, it’s no wonder there’s often a line up down the block to get inside (although, word on the street is that Tuesday nights are quieter). In terms of a menu, Kishimoto has it all: traditional Japanese specialties like kobujime nigiri (preparation involves an ancient method of curing fish in brine), and more modern, quirky creations like salmon oshi sushi with slivers of jalapeños.
Serving (arguably) the best aburi sushi in the city, the line-up often found outside Kishimoto is completely understandable. The flame-seared, box-pressed salmon oshisushi is one of their most popular dishes, and pairs perfectly alongside their super fresh sashimi, served on ice. They are nothing but thorough, offering incredibly attentive service and beautifully plated dishes, all at a reasonable price – what more can you ask for?
