I ordered take out online through their online ordering system, which is very fast and convenient for a lunch time take out order from my work. I got the curry chicken lunch special and with out realizing it, I was going to order an extra samosa thinking it wouldn't come with one because the price was so cheap. But to my surprise it came with the curry chicken, rice and a samosa. Most places for $7.50 you just get the chicken and rice so I was very satisfied with the amount of food and price. I also decided to get as hot as possible because most Indian places give you a mild at best even when you ask for as hot as possible (possibly because of the type of people that live in this area) and this was definitely hot. When we got there it was a little crazy inside because it was 12:30pm and the staff seemed to be rushing around but in all that rush two people had asked us if we were there for the pick up order or to dine in. We got our food quickly and 2 staff members (one of which who seemed like he may have been the owner) sparked up conversations with us while still doing their jobs. The flavour of the curry was great. I don't eat Indian curry as much as Thai curry (for any one who eats both, there is a big difference) but I have some what of an idea how Indian curries should taste. What was good: the price, the service, the food and the convenience is really great . What could be better: if it was an all you can eat buffet and the hours of operation seem to be really weird and the decor inside the restaurant seemed to have been from a pub that was there before it.
We had naan, butter chicken and biryani. Butter chicken was alright, not particularly flavorful and too oily. As I think any decent Indian restaurant should at least make good butter chicken, this was a disappointment. Biryani also wasn't anything memorable. Naan was a complete disappointment as it tasked exactly like the frozen kind. The service was pretty good. The waiter was attentive and seemed to know the menu well. The owner also came out and greeted us, which was nice.
I have been going to Vijay's for years, and find myself writing this review after having a bad experience at a local indian competitor (Empress of India). I signed up for Restaurantica to express my disappointment at Empress, so it's only fair I give Vijay's a pat on the back (while im here). The main problem at Empress was ridiculous prices, and having to pay 'extra' for EVERYTHING (rice??!) well, I order lunch to take back to my office from Vijays atleast once a week and for around 10 bucks I get the meal of my choice, with a side of rice AND a samosa or a soup!! That's extraordinary value, and the food is always made to my liking (sometimes spicy, sometimes medium). Not only that but the offering lasts me 2 lunches. If you want to spend a couple extra bucks get a naan and a small raita, it's delicious with a spicy dish. Oh and the samosa dipping sauce is to die for! Dinner is much of the same, just larger portions and it's quite nice atmosphere with excellent service. Thanks Vijay's, keep it up!
I have eaten here many times and this is the best Indian restaurant I have tried. The food is excellent and the value is even better. Have had exceptional service every time I've been. The staff is helpful in explaining the dishes and making recommendations. Would recommend this spot to anyone.
The nan bread tasted like it was one month old and still trying to defrost. The samosas looked and tasted like frozen meat paste. The "hot" rogan josh curry was milder than Johnson's baby shampoo. Terrible food experience. Won't make that mistake again. Looking forward to some real competition in the area so that the food at this place can have some chance of improving.
I have been to this very nice restaurant a few times and I am delighted at every visit. The owner of this restaurant, Vijay himself, is there to personally great each customer as they arrive. My date and I were seated promptly and politely. We ordered a dinner for two from the menu and our appetizers Onion Bhaji and Samosa arrived quickly. They were delicious and so was the Kingfisher beer. We were also served Padpdum with a very tasty Mango Chutney. I must say that the sauce that was served with the Samosa was the best I have ever tried. The main course of Chicken Korma for my date and the Lamb Bhoona for me, were excellent along with the two kinds of rice and a serving of Aloo Gobi. The Nan bread was hot and also very delicious. At the end of the meal we had some Mango ice cream. I was very pleased with this meal & I will return to try some more of the delights from this restaurant.
The food was pretty good. The butter chicken wasn't anythign special, and you could tell it was missing something, but they made up for it with the rice. Most definitely the best rice I have ever had. The waiter was excellent and kept our glasses full and was very entertaining. However, the place was empty, and at one point, we were the only people there. There was also a bar, not very Indian. We ordered from there the next day and I noticed they charged a bit much, the delivery guy was rude, and my chicken was brown. The simosas however, were amazingg. I recommend the beef ones over the vegetarian ones.
Very good authentic Indian food. The lunch specials are great. The food is well prepared. This is the place if you like it spicy. My only complaint is that the service can be very slow, and even confused. I was brought the wrong lunch special by one server.
Amazing. I have eaten indian food at a bunch of restaurants throughout KW, and I was blown away. We went for lunch and the butter chicken was amazing, and my wife's lamb and spinach was tasty. Add on the fact that you get soup - mulligatawny (best I have ever had) or a veggie samosa with the meal that was under 10.00/perosn... We are SOOOO going back
Food was very good. Some of the better butter chicken I've had. The samosas were huge and very tasty. The atmosphere was warm and cozy and generally made for a great experience. The waiter was fast and courteous. I would definitely go again.
I liked this place right away, the decor is quite nice (almost fine dining), and it contains a pub strangely enough. The food was pretty good. I think I know my Indian food pretty well, so I don't know what the other reviewers are complaining about. Had the lunch special which was reasonably priced at $7.50. The soup was maybe a little bland, veering more toward a lentil or pea soup, but still tasty enough. The lamb curry was quite good, with a nice portion size. Service was very good. I'll be back.
Probably the best butter chicken I've had in Kitchener. Wonderful food and the soup was also amazing. Great ambience and service.
I love Vijays! When I was a kid, we'd go there for special occasions and have take-out weekly. I was probably the only kid at school who brought Samosas for lunch, and now that we live in another city, I find every excuse I can to go back. Tried, tested and true, this one's a winner!
We had quite a few drinks so our per person price is a little higher, but in actuality the quality and amount of food you get for your dollar is unbelievable. We had the dinner for 4 and had enough for lunch for two the next morning. Every dish was fabulous. The decor is quaint, service was good and overall a great dining experience. It was our second time with the same food and same couple. We are never disappointed.
always great food i actually crave the hot spicy dishes after the week end for some reason i cant get it off my mind from the time i get to work till i visit or order take out. its important to realize you can dictate the how spicy you want the food or order not spicy at all. so today i ordered two for take out and the first filled the need the second will be warmed up for tommorow's lunch
A wonderful fair of fine Indian cuisine. Everything was prepared to perfection, from the Vegetable Samosa's to dessert. Especially favoured the chicken and lamb dishes. Portions were a plenty with a nice variety of tasty dishes. Excellent value for the money. Looking forward to the doggy bag! Vijay's is a hidden gem of fine dining establishments in Waterloo region.
The new decor is excellant and the staff is fantastic. Fast service, delicious Kingfisher Beer, The food is out of this world delicious. Just the right amount of spicyness. Cooked to perfection. The sauce for the samosa is the best I have ever tasted. This restaurant should be on everyones list to try. I will go back there again and again.
when we went in there the restaurant was full & couple of people waiting at the bar.We were greeted with the message that it was busy , no place and the host asked us to leave... rather than invite us to wait at the bar. We would assume any buisness common sense would not turn away customer. We would have hoped that an option was given to us to come back after couple of hours as it was just 5:30pm. WE WOULD NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN, FOOD MAY BE GREAT BUT IF YOU DONT HAVE COMMON COURTESY IT IS WORTH IT!!!!!
Vijay's was closed for about a year after a fire, so I'm glad to see they are open again. Previous to this unfortunate situation, they had just rennovated the dining and bar area. This Indian resaurant has a great reputation in the community and has been around long before Indian food was "in". Food there has always been excellent. Its is mainly a family-run business and the staff is always excellent and welcomes any questions from the novice to their cuisine. Note, they are closed Sunday and Monday.
Best restaurant in KW. The "feast" dinners serve twice as many as they say. Try the vegetarian feast for two; it serves about five and is absolutely perfect from start to finish. The service is excellent, too. I have never had better Indian food, and god knows I've tried more than my share of places. They're currently closed after a fire damaged the interior, but when they reopen, you should be first in line. Amazing, delicious, satisfying food.
