Their buffet, while small is really delicious. They continuously improve their recipes to satisfy customers. Really great meal for the price and atmosphere is very authentic and interesting.
I was not very happy at all with the food. Though the service people seemed cool and seemed to be running around trying to take care of things. And the price is not bad at all. To make it clear, I went for the buffet portion. I'll first say, I know my Indian food pretty well and I honestly had some issues distinguishing what some of the stuff was since the taste of pretty much everything was bland. Second, I know its a buffet, but the food didn't seem that fresh. Selection - not great. all in all, a total miss for me. Bland, not fresh, and poor selection. ps the person who compared it to bengali dishes hit the nail on the head. i had bengali friends and have eaten fresh bengali food and i found it very bland...it would be sweet or way too spicey but everything would taste very bland. this is what this experience was like. if you know indian food, you know that each food has a very distinct flavor. for example, butter chicken should have a distinct creamy sauce. this did not have it at all..it seemed almost like the sauce that goes with korma. very weird.
My favourite Indian food in Ottawa! I have been to many Indian restaurants in the ottawa area, and especially those close to this one, and none of them even compare to the quality of food served here. There is a wide variety, from sweet Punjabi-style sauces to some hot south Indian flavours. The naan is fresh and always tastes wonderful. The desserts are great and very authentic. Overall the food is wonderful. The atmosphere is very nice too. The waiters are very kind and pleasant, and always say hi and chat when we come in. The service is not fast, so do not plan to be in and out in a hour or less, but the food is worth the wait. It is always made fresh. My roommates and I either eat in or take out at LEAST once a month...we can't get enough!! I reccommend this restaurant to everyone I know, and so far, none of my friends have been disappointed. They all have become frequent visitors themselves!
The greatest tasting Indian food in Ottawa. If you don't like it, you really have no taste. From mild to flavourful to the hottest dishes. My husband and I are Canadian and love the food. My favourites are the tandoori and Naan, his are the "sweat from the head" spicy hot dishes. We visit at least 5 times a year. Have even hooked our kids (in their twenties) into going. The service is slower than most are used to but really, do you want to be rushed through dinner. We plan to visit over Christmas just to get away from so much turkey. The only drawback is the frequent takeout people who have to venture through the restaurant to the back as they have not been able to get a table. Hope you give it a try, as I'd hate for the negative reviewers to slow their business.
We will not return. The food was disgusting - inedible even. The place is not clean.
I went for Lunch Buffet. The decor is pretty nice and tidy but the FOOD WAS AWFUL. It does not have a typical north indian taste rather it's a bengali (sweet) version of Punjabi food. Someone who is trying out Indian food for the first time may like it 'cos of the sweetness and mild taste. Someone who wants to try authentic Indian food DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. The butter chicken was sweet, all curries for veggies and meat were sweetened, Gulabjamuns were watered down (More water than sugar in the syrup and probably made from flour than milk). The mix veg was made out of cheap frozen veggies. I also caught the waiteress drinking juice from the same Jug which was put out on the Buffet table (Gross!!) Only thing i liked was the smile on face of the people who were serving and a very tidy place with lots of Indian artifacts displayed... Not a worth place to go and spend $50 for family
This is hands down the best Indian food in all of Ottawa. The buffet always has fantastic selection and the dinners are excellent as well. If you're ordering to go - give at least 30 minutes for your order to be ready for pickup. Service at lunch time is much faster than dinner time but staff are always SOOOO friendly. overall this restaurant is 10/10 - you'd be crazy to eat anywhere else!
A wonderful package! Great tasting food, great service and affordable prices.
Lunch buffet is THE BEST Indian food I have evr had. Wonderful variety and amazing taste. I would reccomend it to anyone and will certainly be back!
My favorite Indian Restraunt in the world. While I agree with others that the decor leaves something to be desired, I go to restraunts for the food, not the paintings on the wall. While not entirely traditional in their taste, it is by far the best Indian Food available. Though things seem to have changed a bit over the years (perhaps its just me?) I still prefer it to any other restraunt (Indian or not!) It's worth a trip, even if it is just for take-out!
Great tasting food. The Light of India special platter is the best deal in town. It only comes with a single order of rice, but there is enough meat for three people.
The chicken curry was tasteful and the chicken was very tender however, the chicken was very fatty for some reason. The samosas where good but somewhat bland at the same time. The naan bread was no different than any other naan bread. All in all it was an ok experience, I would go back probably cause it's across the street from my house.
I have also moved away from Ottawa to Kingston. I have tried two Indian Restaurants in Kingston and they are both very poor. I have been spoiled by the superb quality at this place. This restaurant has to be one of the best Indian food places I have eaten at. It is second to none. The food is so good I can't wait for my next trip to Ottawa to have another meal.
I've been to Light of India many, many times over the last 20 years and it has to be one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The decor is not fantastic... but the food makes up for it! An experience you won't forget!
dito the rest of the reviewers- excellent Indian food- been many times and always consistant
This is the best Indian food I've had in a restaurant; a an ottawa local I've eaten here dozens of times, and have eaten and dozens of Indian restaurants. Plus you just can't beat Sanjay's smile.
I miss this place so much- just moved from Ottawa and can't find Indian restaurants like this one and others in town to compare.
A True Hidden Jem for all Indian food lovers alike!!! Best food ive ever had , we go weekly for their buffet. Great Price!
