This place use to be somewhat decent. The fries use to be real big home fries, but they switched to these cheap packaged disgusting mcdonalds type of fries. That's not what I'm complaining about though. Check this out. Not only did our server wipe the seats and the tables with the same cloth (mmm butt sweat on my table!) but There was a hair in my chicken alfredo. The server didn't know what to do or how to respond properly when I addressed the situation and it was not waived off the bill. Don't believe me? Contact me and i'll show you the picture. I will be contacting the health department regarding this. Oh, and the tables have food stuck in between them and the walls.
A great meal with great service, we'll definitely be back! Huge portions and a nostalgic atmosphere make for a memorable time. The sweet potatoe fries are a delicious "upgrade" from the regular fries.
I travel to Toronto for work and I always come back to this specific location. My favourite servers Mary and Grace have been there for at least since I started going to Fran's 4 years ago. This time, Grace served us and we loved her generous, friendly, and courteous service! You're a treat Grace! This time I brought my colleagues and two of us ordered the Fish and Chips and the other one ordered a burger. The Fish and Chips batter has changed and is better than ever. The fish was fried to perfection - flakey and the beer batter was crispy with the right amount of seasoning. My colleague seem to enjoy her burger.
I had enjoyed eating at this place before I had a friend of mine work here. He worked at Fran's for just over a year, and the horror stories about the kitchen made me cringe. One of the chefs regularly urinates in the alley behind the restaurant and returns to the kitchen area without washing his hands. Another waitress has eaten food from the dish bins on more than one occasion, and has complete disregard for touching the food with her hands. I will not mention other gruesome details, but there have been at least one sighting of cockroaches on the walls beside the booths while the restaurant was full. I used to have lunch here regularly (My office is located close to this location) until my eyes were open to these details. Needless to say, I haven't been there since, and don't recommend you go either.
My wife and I were looking for a place to eat for dinner and stopped by Fran's. My wife wanted an all day breakfast and I was satisifed with a burger and fries. The waiter took our drink Orders (Pepsi and a glass of water). He returned with two glasses of water. I waited for the Pepsi thinking the waiter was being polite and bringing water out for the table and the Pepsi would be coming. We placed our orders of a "Premium Fran Breakfast" and a Classic Franburger with Fries". The food came about 10 minutes later. The waiter ensured there was ketchup, relish and mustard on the table and was about to leave. I inquired if the Pepsi I ordered was available yet at this time? It quickly appeared after only the SECOND REQUEST! The fries were dry for my liking but the burger was good. The Homefries in the breakfast were perfect. However the sausages, cut in half length wise were a little dry as well. If we are in the area again perhaps we'll return. However, this isn't exactly the best "greasy spoon" restaurant in town.
50's style dinner with that era of decore. We went early in the morning and it was not too busy. The food came to the table quickly and it was hot. homefries were good and eggs were cooked to order.
It's was just after 12:00 noon, and I decided to try it. For some reason, I felt like having the all-day breakfast that consisted of a 5 oz steak, two eggs, homefries, toast and coffee. I must say the steak was pretty tough. I chewed it very carefully lest I choke to death. I really liked the homefries. I was so tired from walking around that waiting 15 minutes for my meal to come wasn't a problem. I just sat and enjoyed my coffee. My biggest problem with the place? Well, it's probably my age, but the 1950's music was fine, except they have the volume up so loud, my teeth rattle and bones vibrate! Oh, I might give it another try sometime.
We stoped in here around 11pm on a weeknight and after waiting 10-12 minutes for the waitress to come over to Our table ordered some fries and deserts. Only Two other tables were taken in the Diner yet We waited likely another 15-20 minutes for Our food to come. Waitress looked asleep on Her feet and pretty well dropped the plates in front of Us. We then got looking around and noticed the food laying under tables and half inch of dust on the lamp shades. We had lots of time to observe has the Waitress never brought Us Our bill and We had to go up to the cashier and ask for it. Just a general dirtyness about this place and makes You wonder what goes on where We can't see like the kitchen. We were going to come back here for breakfast as Our hotel was nearby but changed Our minds after this visit. Sorry too many other options out there.
This restaurant/diner is open 24 hours a day. Which is great for late night eats. I came here around 5-6am in the morning not being able to find anywhere else open. I order the Big Breakfast, which included: two eggs in the way you like it (I ordered one pouch and sunnyside up, two bacons, sausages, pancakes, toast and fries. This really is a large breakfast. I found the eggs..just like any egg.. I did not quite like the sausages because it tasted pretty funny..but I loved the pancakes. The pancakes were big and fluffy. I love the pancakes. I would recommend the pancakes to anyone.
Great burgers along with the fries! Old atmosphere though. Defedly coming back again!
What possessed me to order what I did? Why didn't it come with a warning? Why they bother keeping it on the menu when they can't even PERFECT it is simply beyond me. I only ordered that Eggs Benedict-type mess because I felt like English muffins that day... but the consistency was so CRUMBLY (as in NOT chewy like it's SUPPOSED to be), COLD (where did the burnt edges come from? I can't say), and chemical tasting, I couldn't eat the second half (and I was one hungry be-yotch). I just ate what mattered which was everything except the abyssmal muffin... an insult to the English. Haha. The smoked salmon, Hollandaise sauce, and home fries, were much better. I had to steal some of my sister's french toast points to be satisfied. A smattering of cinnamon and brown sugar would have been nice, but alas... they never asked us, or we forgot to ask them. Plus, the service was horribly slow, the food was lukewarm to mildly cold. If I ever go there again, I will wire my jaws shut.
Haven't been to Fran's in quite a few years, due to the slow service and lacklustre food; however I was very pleasantly surprised with this traditional Toronto diner upon returning. I don't know if it's the memories of years past or the fact it is simple no frills comfort food. The food was delicious and nothing beats that Fran's coffee served in a old fashioned cup and saucer. Will be back soon!
Best Breakfast i have ever had. The pancakes are crazy~

You can grab breakfast at one of Toronto’s most famous diners on Christmas Day! Two of Fran’s locations, College and Victoria & Shuter, will be December 25 this year. A feast of waffles, pancakes, eggs and of course milkshakes will be available for guests.
View this Smart ListThere is no doubt about it, Fran’s is an iconic 24-hour diner. First opened in 1940, the diner has humble beginnings. It started as a 10-stool counter at Yonge and St. Claire and has since grown into a casual dining behemoth, and an essential must-try at the CNE each year. Try the infamous Banquet Burger, which features a half-pound patty topped with melted Canadian cheddar and bourbon maple bacon. Two out of the three locations are open 24 hours a day.
