Rita Khlafon and her husband, chef Yan Khlafon, spent years travelling around Eastern Europe. When they finally settled in Toronto, Rita, who is originally from the Ukraine, and Yan, who hails from Russia, noticed the lack of Eastern European restaurants throughout the city.
In 2012, they opened the first Schnitzel Hub at Yonge and Steeles in Toronto, which was meant to be a grab-and-go takeout place serving homemade schnitzels with a few creative twists. “Our customers kept telling us that the food was amazing and that they wanted to enjoy it with a beer or wine,” recalls Rita, who immediately applied for a liquor license to meet the needs of their customers. Located in midtown, Schnitzel Hub focuses on Eastern European cuisine, offering some of the best schnitzel in the city. The German influence can be seen throughout its menu, with items like goulash soup, spaezle, Oktoberfest sausage and more.
This midtown place prides itself on its authentic and modern takes on the Eastern European delicacy. The menu offers schnitzel in pork, chicken, veal and eggplant. The pan-fried meal comes in the traditional style, but Schnitzel Hub also offers unique options like the Canadian Schnitzel, topped with wild mushrooms, caramelized onion and cheese, or the Jaeger Schnitzel, topped the mushrooms, bacon and red wine sauce. Sides include coleslaw and your choice of spaezle, mashed potatoes, home fries or sauerkraut.
