I got the opportunity to check off another restaurant on my list of places to visit this past Saturday. Spring Rolls located at Conestoga Mall in Waterloo, Ontario. I've been wanting to try their food for some time now, and after shopping, myself and two guests decided to give it a try. We showed up at 6:00pm on a Saturday, so the restaurant was very busy. We had a 10 minute wait until our table was ready. Walking into the restaurant I couldn't help but notice how beautiful it was. Hats off to the designers. The main dinning room is divided by hanging crystals, which creates a beautiful sparkling waterfall effect. Great use of color, and space. The bathrooms were very messy. Get someone up their every 15 minutes please. Water and used paper towel everywhere. In fact there was no paper towel or hand drying machine. I had to use toilet paper to dry my hands, which is something I don't enjoy. The ladies were a mess too apparently. For an app we ordered Crispy Wontons, Coconut Shrimp and Dim Sum. Everything was great. The Wontons were delicious. The Dim Sum was fine, but what I didn't understand was the dipping sauce served. A small mixture of ketchup and mustard. We were joking about how it looked like just that, and when I tried the sauce I was right. Ugh! Ketchup and Mustard with my Dim Sum? I don't think so. The winner of the three apps was the Coconut Shrimp, which was perfect. Super crispy and tender. I could order several plates of just that alone. Our main courses were Kalbi Short Rib with Tiger Shrimp, Teriyaki Beef Udon & Crispy Honey Chicken. Now my biggest problem with the three main courses was the temperature of the food. Served to us warm, not hot. Only minutes into the meal our Short Ribs and Tiger Shrimp were cold. It was so busy, and we were very hungry we decided not to complain. But no doubt, the food was served warm, almost cold. This was frustrating. Besides the temperature of the dishes, the food itself was fine. I really enjoyed the Crispy Honey Chicken, simply because I love honey. My two guests felt the sauce was a little too sweet. Also they felt the mixture of the honey sauce with the snow peas was a little odd. Regardless I thought the dish was great. It was the only dish served hot. Teriyaki Beef Udon was just that. Served warm, not hot. But the flavor of the dish strong, and we ate it all. The Short Rib was what disappointed us. Simply because of the temperature. It was tender and soft and tasted great, but it was cold. The Tiger Shrimp were cold also. We substituted the Jasmine Rice with Fried Rice. The dessert was a little disappointing as well. We got a trio of mini cakes. Two White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecakes and one Red Velvet Cupcake. The Cupcake was good, but the Mini Cheesecakes were simply mushy. The restaurant was great, beautiful on the inside, but the food wasn't hot. Which in my opinion is silly. I would of thought this was restaurant basics, serve the food hot. The owners missed that by reading other reviews. It's a attractive restaurant with a good selection of dishes, and the food did taste good, but we were disappointed by the temperature served. I really enjoyed the Crispy Honey Chicken. There are a lot of restaurants in Waterloo, a lot of very good restaurants, so I am not sure I will be back to Spring Rolls.
My colleagues' meals arrived within 10 minutes of each other. Mine did not arrive for at least 40 minutes and others at the table were already done. The waiter either forgot or ignored me and I finally had to ask another server for help. When my lunch finally arrived (the "Chefs Special Roll") it was completely tasteless except for the overly salty smoked fish on half the pieces. I did not receive any apology from the waiter, nor any questions about whether I enjoyed my lunch (in spite of the fact that it was obvious that there were problems since I'd left most of it on my plate). When I went to speak to the Manager because I was puzzled about the lack of interest in my experience, the he did not apologize for the 45 minute delay. Instead, he questioned me repeatedly about what I meant by saying that my food was not fresh. Did I mean that it wasn't hot? (I had ordered a roll). Did I mean that I just didn't like it? The Manager finally took my bill and gave me 50% of my bill (I hadn't asked for a discount, I was looking for an apology and explanation. About me: I have never made an on-line complaint before. I will never go back to Spring Rolls in Waterloo, and would not recommend it.
Spring Rolls also has a food court location in the mall. I will go here every now and then for lunch. Rude, is also a good word to describe a few of the staff they have that take your order. A smile would be very nice as would accomadating basic requests such as hoisin sauce for pad thai. Simply saying no when you ask for some and it's already pre-packaged isn't the right answer. Smiles please, they're easy to do, and since there's 10 other spots in the food court to choose from ...better start smiling soon!
Poorly managed. Anyone who has standards would not like it. Middle class would love it.
Have been twice now- one business lunch and then was so pleased took the hubby. Ordered from daily special menu both time, Good deal- lunch was soup/app & main , dinner was app/main & dessert. Great price & wonderful food. Best Mango Creme Brule ever - and what was that raspberry/chocolate sauce YUMM! Steaks were melt in the mouth. So much food on both occassions had huge doggie bags to enjoy later. How can anyone not Luv this place. Beautiful, great friendy service, washrooms to die for and the food Martha, oh the food! Well done all around!
The style of cooking and quality of food at this place does not match what the cool interior design warrants. Some of the dim sum are not well made, for example the steamed rice rolls are revolting. Other dishes are quite tasty and adequate: curried cuttlefish, spring rolls, green curry. The tea good and is served in quite a fancy bag hanging on a stick. However the bag sometimes rips spilling the loose tea into the cup, so although cool, this is not practical. Also they have something called cheese dumplings and it’s basically a pierogie, full of sweet cream served on a drizzle of fruit syrup. I’d expect to see this at Tim Horton’s rather than an Asian restaurant. The restaurant is catered towards posers and more of a place to show off and impress someone on a first date rather than visit regularly.
I was there for the Sunday Dim Sum menu. I found it to be a little costly for what we got. The rice rolls were disgusting but i did like the Vietnamese style coconut pandan crepe. Most of the dishes were ok but certainly was not real authentic cooking, but seemed merely as a microwaved dish. Presentation was good but certainly nothing like in the pictures. Better places to eat then here.
Been to this Spring Rolls twice. The interior is amazing, and the service is great. But the food is quite expensive and definitely not authentic. Their lunch dim sum is ridiculously priced and geared towards non-Asians. Their springs rolls were quite yummy though, hot and crispy. The pad thai was average. If you want authentic Asian food, avoid this place. But if you want a good night out with friends, this could be the place.
Spring Rolls is an all time fav ... first time Eaton Centre Toronto, 2nd time Mississauga (Erin Mills and Sq 1, 3rd time Waterloo ... great food, design, price, and portions ... hoping one is built somewhere along Ira Needles and University ... in all the new development there ... maybe next to the new theatre ...
i've heard rave reviews of this restaurant but didn't have the chance to go as they were only based in the GTA. now they have a convenient location at the conestoga mall in waterloo so my family went to try it out to see what the fuss was about. first impressions: decor was very nice, great atmosphere and we were greeted warmly. the menu is absolutely huge! so if you're not in the mood for chinese, you could still go for thai. about the food, the appetizers were great and the food presentation was pleasing but a bit on the pricey side. i ordered sweet and sour chicken and to be honest, i was shocked at the portion with the price tag that comes with it. i can get the same thing for 5 bucks at most restaurants in town! my daughter ordered a plate of singapore noodles, and honestly we could've gotten a larger order for a cheaper price elsewhere. the food is nothing phenomenal but the atmosphere was great. the service is a bit slow and my server didn't know wht she was doing but i guess it's a good spot for a first date. not my thing
I can't beleive the previous review! We found the food to be very good. Hot, tasty and well presented. Servers were amicable as well as knowledgeable.
Only one word to describe the food quality of this restaurant... AWFUL! There was new zensational dim sum menu that they were promoting. The price is reasonable and the food from the menu looked great... well.. guess what? the food you actually get looks nothing like what those pictures in the menu looks like and taste incredibly salty and soggy.. it was disgusting.. Some of the food (shrimp dumplings and rice rolls) looked like they just heated up the frozen food... I highly recommend people to NOT to visit this restaurant!
