Sweet spots for coffee and tea in South Granville
There’s no shortage of major chain coffee shops in South Granville, but there are also plenty of more charming options. Whether you’re seeking your first pick-me-up of the day or settling in for a leisurely chat over afternoon tea, here are a few local faves.
Soffee Café
1426 8th Ave W, Vancouver, BC V6H 1E1This delightful tea shop looks like your grandmother’s living room might have looked had she planned on hosting 20 people for tea. With an extensive selection of loose-leaf teas, fair trade espresso and their own signature fresh fruit tea brewed over 12 hours, there are plenty of sipping options here. But the best part of afternoon tea is the food – who can resist finger sandwiches and tiny tarts? Reservations are required 24 hours in advance for afternoon high tea (13 pieces) and the eight-piece demi tea.
Beaucoup Bakery & Cafe
2150 Fir St, Vancouver, BC V6J 3B5If you like your caffeine with a side of pastry, Beaucoup is the spot. Owner Jackie Kai Ellis studied French pastry making in Paris – and it shows. Her croissants are consistently rated best in the city, and there are plenty of other drool-worthy baked goods to choose from, too. They serve up 49th Parallel coffee and Bellocq teas.
Bump N Grind Specialty Coffee
3010 Granville St, Vancouver, BC V6H 3J8This well-lit, high-ceilinged space with floor-to-ceiling windows up front is bright and alive even on the drizzliest of Vancouver days. There’s a communal table for 14 at the back of the room along with more intimate seating up front, and a “zine library” featuring mini-zines from a local artist for in-shop reading. Tasty treats – including Earl Grey shortbread cookies – are baked right behind the coffee bar, so the shop smells delicious. Coffee brands rotate to highlight multiple high-end roasts, and Aeropress brewing is available.
Dose Coffee
1517 Broadway W, Vancouver, BC V6J 1W6Why yes, those are paintings of professional wrestlers on the walls. This funky little shop has very little seating space, but it’s bright and busy, with plenty of interesting art to hold your attention while you pop in for a coffee to go. (Bonus: It’s right beside the bus stop for the 99 B Line.) They serve Origins organic coffee, locally roasted on Granville Island.
Goodge Place
1523 8th Ave W, Vancouver, BC V6J 1T5This little black-and-white gem is a combo coffee bar/shop that sells everything from fresh flowers to jewellery to bikes, with the goods coming from top brands like House of Hackney and Mitchell Black. The shop has just two tables inside and two out, plus a few seats at the bar, so seating is at a premium – but with so many treasures to look through, there’s little reason to sit down. The coffee is Milano, the tea is Bellocq and the bakery items are from Faubourg and Cadeaux Bakery.
Murchie's Tea & Coffee
101-1501 Broadway W, Vancouver, BC V6J 4Z6This classic B.C. tea and coffee company was founded in New Westminster in 1894, and has been creating its own loose-leaf tea blends ever since. They blend their teas and roast their own Arabica coffee beans in Delta, and serve and sell them at eight locations across the province. The South Granville outpost is more of a shop than a café, but you can order your favourite cuppa to go.
Wicked Cafe
1399 7th Ave W, Vancouver, BC V6H 1B8This neighbourhood café takes its coffee seriously – not what you’d expect from an off-the-beaten track spot that looks like a greasy spoon from the outside. They serve up Intelligentsia roasts, and the Americano comes as a shot of espresso with a side of hot water so coffee aficionados can get the mix exactly to their taste. It’s definitely a locals’ spot: local art hangs on the walls, locals fill the seats and local charities receive support through the café’s partnership with Sproot, a Vancouver start-up.
Bean Around The World
2977 Granville St, Vancouver, BC V6H 3J6The South Granville Bean Around the World location, one of 24 shops in this Vancouver coffee chain, has just completed a major renovation that leaves the space feeling bright and new. This North Vancouver–based company has been around since 1990, buying their coffee beans direct from plantations and hand-roasting them on the North Shore.
