5 must-pack items for your backpacking trip

November 6, 2014

Backpacking can be an easy way to travel since there's no luggage to carry around. Unless your backpack starts weighing you down. Keep it light by packing only these five essentials.

5 must-pack items for your backpacking trip

1. Shoes

Remember to plan for all weather events when picking your footwear. A pair of flip-flops and a pair of sneakers are ideal. You only need to keep one type in your backpack at a time since you can just wear the other. For example, you can wear the flip-flops on the beach during warm weather, while the sneakers will allow you to head off-road and will offer your feet protection if the weather turns nasty.

2. Shirts

A couple of tank tops, T-shirts and collared shirts are all you need. Remember you can rinse and wash the shirts at stops along the way. You might wonder why you need to take up precious space by packing a collared shirt or two, but if you are backpacking in urban areas, you might want to grab a bite to eat at a sit-down restaurant or go out for an evening on the town. Also pack at least one hooded sweatshirt for chilly days.

3. Pants/Shorts

Manufacturers have released hybrid shorts that are both swimming and walking shorts, eliminating many reasons for a pair of walking shorts and a pair of swimming trunks. Be sure to pack a pair of lightweight pants to protect your legs from areas that have mosquitoes or other biting insects. Avoid packing heavy denim jeans since lightweight canvas-style pants are just as durable.

4. Sunglasses

Sunglasses are a must-have to protect your eyes. Unfortunately, they are easy to drop and break, so pack two pairs.

5. Coat

If you will be in an area that gets cold, pack a waterproof, lightweight hooded coat. By opting for waterproof materials, you get a coat that doubles as something to keep you warm and as rain gear to keep you dry.
