A Kitsilano institution for more than three decades, Zulu Records is one of the few record stores in Vancouver still going strong. Its vast, multi-level space is filled with vinyl albums, CDs and other music-related items, new and used, ranging from vintage album rock to the cutting edge of indie music, covering at least six decades of popular music.
Owner Grant McDonagh explains his store’s endurance: “People want pre-recorded music, and they always will. The difference is how they get it. At a store like ours, we provide an atmosphere, so it’s like a bookstore. If you walk in, you might have one or two things in mind, but you’re visually taken in by the thousands and thousands of items.”
“There’s just such a variety, it’s like a history of popular music.”
Nestled amongst the storefronts of West 4th, Zulu is a staple among vinyl-lovers in Vancouver, and for good reason. An extensive collection of used vinyl (and CDs up the whimsical twisting staircase) are all stocked at reasonable prices. The best part of the setup here are the listening stations, which allow you to take new artists for a spin before buying.
