CLAS provides quality community living opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. CLAS promotes and facilitates their exercise of individual rights, fulfillment of responsibilities, and participation within their communities. CLAS was formed in 1976 as a response to the challenges of de-institutionalization, a movement championed by parents and organizations dedicated to improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. CLAS began as a volunteer, charitable organization, working with the Nova Scotia Government to provide needed facilities in Kings County. It was the first association of its kind in the province.
