Consiglio's Kitchenware

It’s hard to imagine that a family-run business whose model was originally based on a now-obsolete tradition could still be growing, but that’s the story at Consiglio’s Kitchenware & Gifts. And they not only survived; they thrived. Boasting a massive new Etobicoke location, the current management (father-son team of Sal and John Consiglio) has now reached into a third generation.

What's the old-fashioned custom that gave birth to this landmark Italian-Canadian retailer? Il corredo. It translates as “dowry” or “trousseau,” but those terms don’t quite conjure up the passion with which immigrant mamas used to equip their teenage daughters with the very best biancheria (linens) and utensili cucina (kitchenware) lest they forfeit any hope of landing a decent husband.

The idea for the store was born in 1975 when the late John Consiglio, a real estate agent, was seeking a new career opportunity. A relative in the import business suggested that John open a shop to sell the fancy bedding, tablecloths and other linens he was bringing in from Italy. The rest is history.
