Comfort food dishes from Edmonton restaurants

There are certain foods that we seek out in the worst of times for solace. These tasty dishes are known as “comfort food” and they are key to reminding us that the sun will come out tomorrow. These Edmonton spots serve up some of the most comforting dishes you’ll ever need.

Boualouang Laos & Thai

10569 97 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5H 2L4

Every time that it’s cold, rainy, snowy or generally disgusting outside, I head to Boualouang Laos and Thai for their soul-saving Tom Yum Ga Tee. It’s a rich, coconut broth with hunks of chicken in it, and it is beyond delicious. It’s also great for colds because it clears your sinuses and soothes your throat. I’ll even go so far as to say that this huge bowl of creamy bliss is far better than any chicken noodle soup – it warms your stomach and your soul.

The Common

9910 109 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5K 1H5

Chicken and waffles became a huge fad in Edmonton circa 2012 but it’s for a good reason – the combination of a fluffy Belgian waffle and meaty, piping hot breaded chicken is genius. The Common adds apple bacon relish and spicy ancho maple sauce to theirs to make it both savoury and comforting.

Blue Plate Diner

Main-12323 Stony Plain Rd NW, Edmonton, AB T5N 3Y5

Mac-n-cheese is the ultimate comfort food. Blue Plate Diner ups the yum factor by using three different kinds of cheese and a béchamel sauce to create a creamy heaven. You’ll find mozzarella, asiago and cheddar in this bad boy, along with corkscrew pasta and tomatoes. It’s a vegetarian dish but, if you need the comfort of meaty goodness, you can add Italian sausage or bacon.

Urban Diner

12427 102 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5N 0M2

Chili always brings back memories of my mom’s crockpot, full of a thick combo of meat, beans, veggies and sauce, steaming hot and satisfying. The chili at Urban Diner doesn’t have any meat in it, but it still hits the spot. It’s thick, filling and tastes like momma made it.

In April 2016, Conde Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards for the Best Pizza in the World: The Top 14 Cities for Pizza placed Edmonton at number eight on the list. With a diverse number of fantastic pizzas to choose from, including hand-tossed, wood-fired pies with white or red sauce and fun toppings ranging from pineapple to pine nuts, you're sure to find one you adore. Buon appetito!
