Grocery shopping doesn’t have to be an unpleasant task. Many markets are independently owned, family-run businesses, whose owners really care about ensuring the very best ingredients are available for Edmontonians. Next time you shop, you can feel good about buying organic and supporting local farmers and producers. I also mention some ethnic grocery stores for when you want to spice up your meal plan!
This locally owned business has five locations in Edmonton, each catering to the needs of the community. H&W supports local farmers and also sells produce from around the world, so you can purchase those exotic fruits and vegetables, as well. If they don’t sell a certain item that you’re looking for, let them know and they’ll try to bring it in.
The Organic Box delivers local, organic groceries right to your door. Grocery shopping has never been easier. Just create an account, choose from four different boxes (for families, couples, individuals or fruit-only), customize your order and wait for your groceries to arrive. If you aren’t sure, try the trial membership. It doesn’t just stop at produce; you can order organic meat, butter, dairy, eggs, cereals, pantry items, cleaning products and more.
Wild Earth Foods is a family-run independent grocery store, making Alberta products easily accessible for Edmontonians. The owners believe in supporting the Alberta economy and ensuring customers know where their food comes from. In store, all local products are identified. Stop in for produce, meats, pet food, dairy and more. Don’t miss the Wild Earth Bakery & Café next door, where you can pick up a pre- or post-grocery shopping snack or coffee.
Blush Lane Organic Market began with an orchard in Keremeos, B.C. Today, with two locations in Alberta, the market sources organic produce from Alberta and directly from their orchard. They also sell gourmet prepared foods, deli items, baked goods, cow, sheep and goat products and Canadian artisan cheeses. The market is located in the Roots on Whyte building, which is also home to my favourite breakfast and brunch spot – Under the High Wheel.
When I need garam masala, chana masala or kasoori methi to make my favourite Indian recipes, I head to All India Grocery in Millwoods. The store sells frozen items, fresh produce, baking ingredients, spices and meats. Afterwards, I often stop next door at All India Sweets and Restaurants to peruse the traditional desserts.
Established in 1993, T&T Supermarket is a great place to go for Asian produce, seafood, baked goods and packaged food. The supermarket has grown from two initial stores in Burnaby and Richmond, B.C. to being a well-known Asian supermarket across Canada. I prefer the new south-side location in Edmonton and I usually spend most of my time in the bakery, eyeing the breads and pastries. And, if you’re looking for a quick meal, you can order take-out from the Asian deli.
