There aren’t enough Thai restaurants in this town, but the handful Calgary does have are real winners and often quite busy. Fragrant with basil, galangal, satay and lemongrass, their cuisine styles and dish selections are typically extensive and deliciously diverse from place to place.
A sparse, shared-table Thai spot on 17th Avenue Southwest opposite Western Canada High School, the à la carte options at Tuk Tuk Thai are succulent and priced to move. Try pad Thai served with chicken, prawn or veg and dishes such as beef masman curry with slow-cooked potatoes and onions as well as swimming rama made with tofu or chicken, served with spinach and peanut sauce. Also try the Tukky Sticks with pineapple plum sauce.
Located in an exotically refurbished former Burger King building on 16th Avenue Northwest, Juree Thai Place Restaurant’s high ceilings and big windows make it a bright and pleasant retreat. Start with one of several hot and sour soups or appetizers that include Thai dumplings and papaya salad. Move on to mains such as green curry prawns, mixed seafood with basil or Thai fried noodles. Combination dinners are available for two to four diners.
Located on 32 Avenue Northeast close to Barlow Trail, Thai Boat serves nicely presented standards such as pad Thai, tom yum soup, red curry chicken and various lemongrass entrees. Its crowd-pleaser of a menu also features Western-Thai-Chinese fusion dishes such as ginger beef, also served with pork, chicken or prawns.
Not many restaurants enjoy the seal of approval of a national government, but Thai Sa-On proudly displays the official endorsement of The Thailand Department of Export Promotion Ministry of Commerce for Authentic Thai Food. And its food is as excellent as this seal of approval is lengthy. Dishes range in heat level from sweet and salty pineapple chicken to delightfully steamy shrimp and squid sautéed in chili paste and five-alarm drunken beef. Ask about the top-notch wine menu.
Formerly a Calgary Farmers' Market kiosk, Hearts Choices Vegan Café is located in The Brick Plaza on Macleod Trail Southwest. The small Thai spot serves curries, satays and mock-meat dishes. The dessert menu features gluten-free vegan cupcakes. Fresh and frozen take-home dishes are also available.
