5 tricks to getting medical help when you need it

July 28, 2015

You're not sick enough to head to the emergency room, but you really need to see your doctor — and your doctor's receptionist says there isn't an available appointment for three weeks. How do you get in?

5 tricks to getting medical help when you need it

1. Be polite

Politely let the receptionist know that you have a problem that needs to be addressed right away. Your doctor probably keeps a few appointments free each day for patients who need immediate help.

2. Get on the cancelation list

If that doesn't work, be sure to leave your name and number and ask her to call you if another patient cancels and an appointment becomes available.

3. Call your doctor directly

Reach out to your doctor and leave a message saying that you haven't been able to schedule an appointment that you really need. Ask if he or she can help.

4. Call back tomorrow morning

Call your doctor's office the first thing the next morning with the hope that another patient left a message overnight, cancelling an appointment. If no one has cancelled, explain again — politely — that you need help now.

5. Reach out to your insurance company

Consider calling your insurance company, local hospital or health-care clinic if it offers doctors and nurses who field calls for non-emergency medical issues. If you don't need face-to-face attention, these professionals may be able to offer you help for your problem over the phone and save you a trip to the doctor.

If you're seeking medical attention and can't get in to see your family doctor, consider trying one of these tips to help you get an appointment when you need it.
