Enjoying the great outdoors and the fresh air can really work up an appetite, but “roughing it” doesn’t mean that you can’t eat well.

4 delicious camping recipes

First, get the right gear

The first ingredient for a delicious camping meal is a proper heat source.

Open fire

  • If you’re using wood for campfire cooking, it must burn clean.
  • Use dry wood.
  • Never strip trees of green wood as this may cause your fire to be smoky.
  • Place a large flat rock at the back of your fire pit. This is called a “chimney rock,” which will direct any smoke away from you and your food.
  • Be sure to start with kindling to get a nice blaze going. Then, add larger pieces of wood.
  • Eventually, you’ll have coal, which is perfect for cooking.

Camp stove:

  • These are highly efficient, (you can get a pot of boiling water going in just minutes), and they’re better for the environment.
  • From a small, single-burner stove to a double burner (much heavier and recommended for car camping not back-country use), these are both great options.

Let’s get cooking!

  • Bannock bread: This is a meal unto itself. To make it, you’ll need:

    • 2 ½ cups of flour
    • 2 tsp of baking powder
    • ½ tsp salt
    • a sprinkle of sugar
    • 2 ½ tbsp of oil
    • 2/3 of a cup of warm water.
  • Put everything but the water into a bowl, kneading until crumbly. Slowly add water. Keep kneading until soft. Don’t add more water! Wrap a few handfuls around the ends of sticks (hard wood), making sure the dough is well attached. Cook over coals for 10 – 12 minutes. Or, you can just buy it premixed at a camping store.Check the cooking instructions.
  • Yummy fish: Fillet your fish and put it inside heavy duty foil.
    • Add garlic, dill, lemon, a bit of olive oil, tomatoes and thinly sliced red peppers.
    • Seal the foil tightly and place your catch (even if you did just buy at the supermarket) on the coals for about 10 - 15 minutes.
  • Hot stew: Easy and mess free, this is your “go-to” for a delicious, nutritious hot meal.
    • On a large piece of heavy duty foil, crumble hamburger and top with diced potatoes, onions and any other vegetable you have.
    • Sprinkle with salt and pepper, adding a teaspoon of butter/margarine on top.
    • Wrap tightly and place on coals until done. Add ketchup or hot sauce, and enjoy.
  • Baked applesMake a hole in an apple to get rid of the core and seeds.
    • Put the apple on a piece of heavy duty foil.
    • Mix sugar and cinnamon into a small bowl and pour it into the hole of the apple.
    • Wrap the tinfoil around the apple.
    • Cook over coals for 10-15 minutes.
    • Let cool, and enjoy a tasty, soft apple wrapped in apple skin.
