Preparing to install your new countertops
The first thing you’re going to want to do is to take all the measurements necessary for the installation. Carefully measure the area you want to cover, and draw a scale diagram so you can have your plan ready to go. Once you’ve got the exact measurements ready, you can order the materials you need to install the kitchen countertops. When the materials arrive, you have to do some things to prepare.
First, make sure to turn off all the plumbing, hot and cold. You also might need to disconnect any garbage disposal machines or other devices you have under the countertops.
Next, clear the area. Take everything off the countertops and also remove everything from all the drawers and shelving around the area.
Once your work space is completely clear, you can start going about taking off the old countertops. Unscrew every single screw holding the old countertop down using a power screwdriver.
Then you can carefully pull up the old material and place it to the side.
Installing your new countertops
At this point, you can start preparing to put the new countertops in place. But first, you’ll need to cut out the sink area. Trace out the sink area using a template from its manufacturer or a carefully prepared tracing of it. Once you’re sure of the proper location, cut it out with a jigsaw.
Once everything’s ready to go, install the new countertop and screw it into place, but don’t screw it too tight, as you just need to keep it stable – you don’t want to damage the cabinetry.
When installing your countertop, you’ll want to line the sink area with proper waterproof plumber’s putty. This goes for the faucet heads and the sink basin as well as for sealing around the basin once you’ve already got the countertops in place. The whole project should take you about a day to complete, but when you’re done it will be more than worth it.
