Excellent experience here. The food was authentic and amazing, and the service was great. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for decent Indian food in the Newmarket area.
Middling quality food that was too salty and terribly over priced. My wife was charged $3 for a tea while we waited for take-out. Our salad consisted of plain iceberg lettuce and the rice was poor. Am surprised they can afford to stay in business with the lack of customer service that was displayed.
We have been here once before a few years ago. I don't know why we don't go here more often. Sure, there are less expensive places in Toronto, but this is a really great indian restaurant that is close by. The price is still very reasonable. Not really sure what people don't like about this place and I have been to a lot of indian restaurants and this one is pretty decent by any standards. The kitchen is open, so you can see the making your meal and everyone that helped us were very kind and friendly. We are going back for sure.
We have gone back time and time again to this place even though everytime we have a bad experience. The food quality is great. The chicken used are excellent cuts of white meat and tender. The only problem is in an order, you get very little meat and lots of sauce. At $11.99 for a serving of Butter Chicken, you get a very few pieces or cubes of breast meat, barely even a breast! We have had problems with take out, naans paid for not provided, wrong type of sauce other then what we ordered and like I mentioned not enough food for what you pay for. The sauce is good when its good but as someone mentioned previously its inconsistent. The sauce is cooked differently each time. The owner and staff are very friendly and eating in is pleasant. BUt the owner offered our very young children homemade ice cream and then charged us for it after making it sound like he was giving it to them. I am done with being disappointed with this place. I will go elsewhere. I grew up in Mississauga, where you can get Indian food for decent prices for great food. In Newmarket, India Gate has better quality meat, India Time has way better and flavorful sauces, but poor meat quality..
First time visiting this restaurant. It looks a lit upscale inside, though quite open so there is a lack of privacy. I have to say, the food was not great, I have eaten a lot of indian and I was disappointed. The masala chai tasted like orange pekoe, the ground chicken curry was weird. Naan and onion bhaji were delicious, but that is not hard to screw up. The dal was undercooked (lentils were still hard). I won't go back, I will be trying another Indian restaurant in Newmarket or Richmond Hill.
First off let me start by saying that if you can afford it, this is a great restaurant. Very authentic, and the food is fantastic, but crazy expensive. I don't think the atmosphere is particularly great, but if you're there, you're there for the food. I would recommend take out as the dine in experience can leave alot to be desired and the food is already expensive enough as it is.
After dining at other indian restaurants, we tried India Gate. We have never gone back to the others. It is clean and the service is polite and courteous. The food is yummy. Cured a cold for me too. The owner comes to your table to check on you.
This place is very clean, but the food is not tne best., I been to top indian restaurants and this place is not in the same league. I had the meat sizzler and it seemed like they took meat off peoples plates that didn't want it ,which I think is disgusting. Some of the dishes were extremely oily. I had two of the samosas one was fantastic and other one looked like it was sitting there a for a month, I couldn't believe the contrast. Will I be returning no, the cooks are not consistant. Good luck to the people of Newmarket, they really don't know good Indian Food.
My daughter and I went for dinner late this evening. The restaurant was quiet. We were seated promptly and served with great courtesy. I asked about a special curry that was not on the menu and the chef prepared it brilliantly. Of all the Indian restaurants I have dined at, this was the best experience. The food arrived with appropriate timing and as we both had samplers we were able to taste many things. The server was incredibly helpful and the owner came by to ensure we were pleased. Newmarket is lucky to have such an excellent restaurant. We will definitely be back. While we were eating our meal, the restaurant did a steady takeout business even after 8:30pm on a Sunday night. We overheard a young lady, who appeared to be of Indian descent say she was picking up takeout for her mother. In my experience, when folks who are raised on a cuisine choose a restaurant it's indicative of real quality. I have eaten at Indian restaurants in the Markham area where the quality was good and the service friendly, but I have felt as though it was an Indian restaurant "tuned" to occidentals. At India Gate, I believe that we received the "real deal". Delicious tastes, wonderful people. Highly recommended. Highly recommended.
Well this is our 4th time here and my brother and his family are also addicted. They never disappoint. The place is spotless, the hosts attentive and there is always a smile to go with the icy cold Kingfisher. This time my wife wanted the heat toned down a bit so we asked for a bit milder dishes. Everything was perfect. I personally like heat and the waitress offered to bring me out some of the Vindaloo Sauce. No thanks I said but how about some hot mixed pickles. Well they have a hidden stash of these that are not served up normally. The chef ( not cook ) did a great job on the Nan. He put on a show in the open Tandoor Kitchen twirling the Nan about as if some well rehearsed Ballet. Will we go back.. ??? Hmm I'm going tonight for takeout. A footnote. The owner is a very proud and ethical man. He had seen my earlier review and I asked him why he did not go in and write a few. No he said, that would be wrong. He told me everything on the menu is tested by him and if it is not good it comes off. His pride of ownership shows through in an day and age where everyone wants a quick buck. These guys take time to do it right. Go and try them out.. behind the Henry's Camera Store in the mall. You cant see them from the street but they are well worth hunting down.
I don't think we can get better Indian food than India Gate's. Nice presentataion ,professional service and tasty food. Thanks for being in the town
