This place is located on Erie street two doors north of the Scotia Bank parking garage.
This little place has been numerous things over the years but in resent memory it seems to have been a restaurant more that anything. Asie (sp) was the last incarnation to open there and although we thought it was severing up a very interesting and good fare...it closed this spring. Of course it was closed all winter so no surprise I guess.
The location has reopened as Country Food Store. The space is familiar but the menu is very different. To the left on entry is a series of display coolers with prepared dishes for take out. Breaded veal, stuffed peppers, various chicken dishes, curred salmon, cabbage rolls and so on. Further down are excellent looking sandwiches of numerous types. There are some deserts in the front case as well. The very rear station has soups and made to order sandwiches.
To the right and also on the sidewalk outside is seating. The seating is as you would expect for a casual quick bite sort of place. Simple and sort of country like. The wood floor gives the look of an older food store from mid or early century.
I picked up Cabbage rolls the day I was in. They packaged them and I took them home and warmed then according to their instructions. GFD is a cabbage roll lover and she raved about them and the sauce they were in. GF and I felt they were certainly good. We agreed that we should try some more of their offereings on those nights when eatting at home is the plan, but cooking is not.
I think it is worth a drop in to see what they are offering. Hopefully they will stay open over the winter, they could do a great business once school and winter sports schedules get underway. Fast easy meals, that taste good and you actually know whats in them.
This place is a food shop with seating and a great selection of interesting salads. A nice change from a restaurant and you can get whatever you want and as much as you would like.
