While Scott Cramer is sourcing vinyl for his shop, Neurotica Records, he describes the activity as diving into a bottomless pit. “Every time you think you’ve seen it all, you discover some other absolutely bizarre record,” Scott explains. He describes a homemade record from the 1970s featuring a pimple-faced teenager playing an organ on the cover. “It’s sort of cheesy lounge organ and then there’s this one really cool reggae song,” Scott says with a laugh. Unfortunately for Neurotica shoppers, that record was kept for Scott’s personal collection, but he’s still stocked the shelves of his store with plenty of incredible new and used vinyl, CDs and DVDs.
Neurotica is an old player in the record store game, but the re-opening of a Toronto vintage vinyl destination is like a fresh patch on an old pair of jeans. Neurotica could have opened any time in the last thirty years and still cater to at least one genre of Toronto’s complex music scene, with wooden record shelves that fit equally an ‘80s hair-rock scene, a ‘90s grunge shop, a low-fi emporium from the early aughts, or an artisanal synth-folk bar in contemporary Toronto. In other words, Neurotica has a casual, easy vibe that’s sure to sate any music lover’s taste.
Relocated from its longtime location in Queen West, Neurotica Records keeps on rocking in the Annex's Mirvish Village. Discover out-of-print records in niche genres and kitschy reissues from old pop stars in this funky basement shop filled with collectibles and sentimental favourites. If your vinyl collection is more Burl Ives than Bon Iver, you'll find some amazing gems to add to your crates.
