If there’s one word that describes the Shrimp Cocktail and its owner Wanda, it has to be “dedication.” The long-standing Oshawa restaurant has been serving up authentic, French-inspired meals with excellent service since it first opened back in the ‘90s. The recipe, according to Wanda, is simple: take advantage of local produce and meat and make amazing, fresh food.
“If the farmer’s market is open, I’m there picking up produce,” Wanda says. After serving and managing for over 25 years, she took over the restaurant in 2010 from the former owners. And while the menu has been tweaked, she’s stuck to what’s made the restaurant so successful all these years: quality ingredients, quality staff and great overall customer experiences.
The menu has plenty of selections, from seafood to the popular rib-eye steak served with a smoky-bacon-and-onion jus, but it all comes down to just a few items. “We use only the finest ingredients,” assures Wanda. “Everything’s made in-house. People don’t come here for something smothered in sauce, they want recipes that bring out the flavours of a few fresh ingredients.”

I Have eaten at this restaurant 6 or 8 times over the past 10 years and found it excellent. We Therefore assumed that it would be a nice venue in which to entertain 4 friends. Unfortunately this turned ou to be a mistake. The service was absolutely atrocious with a delay of 1 full hour in receiving our entree orders. I became mildly agitated when noticing that adjacent tables (who arrived after us)had been served while we were still waiting. Both our waiter and the owner ascribed the poor service to their difficulty in serving 2 large groups. Both the proprietor and waiter were very offhand and distinctly unapologetic. We will not return. Dspite the good food, the "so what" attitude was a turn off. I can find equally good food and certainly better service without driving all the way to Whitby for a sub-par experience.
The food and service at this restaurant is truly excellent. We have been going for years and it is one of the best ever and we travel and eat out regularly and have lots to compare to. It is one of our family's favourites. Go try it - it is fantastic!
We love this place - one of the only redeeming restaurants in Oshawa (...but it's really close to Whitby...) The food is always fantastic and unique. The service is pleasant and attentive. The only thing I dislike is the decor - it's horrible - but I'll suffer through it for "Toronto food" closer to home. Oh - and if you're cheap, stay away. You don't deserve to eat like this then. And the rest of us will get seated faster. Recommendation - how about opening another Shrimp Cocktail in Bowmanville??
We've been to Shrimp Cocktail many times and we love it! The food is unique and delicious. What I like best about it is the fact that the preparation is always creative and never something I would make the effort to create at home; for example, I can make a delicious steak, but I wouldn't make a fish filet with a sweet potato-crab meat crust served with some delicious and complex sauce. Extra effort goes into everything from main course to presentation. Service was as expected in a full restaurant. It is always busy, so make a reservation.
food was really, really good. pricey though, but the atmosphere and the service made up for it. Nice place to take a date.
